The
bliss of poverty
I
have seen several rich people living plastic lives.
Their
smiles are plastic, their complexion is plastic and their thought
process is plastic.
I
have seen several poor people with a rich, exuberant, virile and
vibrant body language and they make you feel despondent indeed.
In
one of my trips to the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan, we were in a
camel cart and the moustache rimmed smile of the farmer was almost
disparaging. We eat rotis made of ‘jaun’ and we do
IT
great is what he smirked. And his eskance look at the
ladies in our group was mischievous for them and almost castrating
for us males.
I
washed my humiliation in yet more deodorant.
The
well heeled have been brought up and nurtured in an atmosphere of
fear.Fear of a delayed cry, fear of the quality of water entering the
mouth,fear of the environment.
Fear
the land, fear the water and fear the sky. The panchtatva
itself is untrustworthy.
Now
how do we expect strong men and women to be born and brought up in
an atmosphere of fear and suspicion ?
What
is worse, we start fearing the loss of what is not yet our own.
We
build castles in the air, presume them to be our own and then build
a moat of protection around it.Too bad that the moat itself is made
of fear !
Geet
Sethi, billiards player of international repute, has in a book of his
own talked about an event in which a prominent player was losing due
to fear.He had,for the first time , been offered a huge
sponsorship. The player promised himself an impressive mansion out of
the prize money and at the crucial moment of decision dithered due
to a feared loss of what was not yet his own.Only when he rid
himself of this thought
could he play elegantly.
The
poor has never planned his day beyond the next moment and has no
strings attached that may snap under him.
There
is no stress stronger than that of poverty yet he has learnt to
master it.
I
watch them when they are getting back home in a tractor after a day
of hard manual labour. The women are in bright colours, the men are
smoking lustily and……….they are singing merrily !
Tell
me one of us who gets back home after a day of labour spent in
airconditioned comfort driving back home SMILING !.
Try
and get richer, baby !
